"Superior Performance"

Valerie began bowling in Harford County in 1978 when she went to watch her Mom and Sister bowl in a league at Harford Lanes. She soon became a regular in the Thursday Night Ladies Late League on a team with her Mom and sister Pam. After a few seasons and an improvement in average she was asked to sub in the Friday Night Ladies Classic Scratch League, she became a regular after 2 years on the waiting list and a lot of subbing. Once a regular bowler, this was her primary league. She bowled in the Classic League until joining a mixed team in the Bill Snavely Scratch League. While bowling in this league her average saw the most improvement and she maintained her highest averages. After 5 years away from the game, she was asked to bowl in a mixed league in Forest Hill and enjoyed two years in this league until eventually finding herself back at Harford Lanes, where she continues to bowl.

Valerie has bowled in many leagues and in most Houses in Harford County to include the Thursday Night League at Fair Lanes Edgewood, Friday Early Mixed League at Forest Hill Lanes, and a Men Scratch League in Bel Air Bowl as a member of the only all-women’s team.

She also bowled for two years in a woman’s scratch league in Delaware in the 1980’s. Her high game was bowled in Fair Lanes Edgewood and her first 700 in the Mens Scratch League at Bel Air Bowl. Her highest averages were in leagues at Harford Lanes. She has bowled with many people over the past 35 years but constant has always been her sister Pam who has always been there to provide support on and off the lanes!

Valerie currently serves as a Director on the Harford County USBC Women’s Bowling Association. She also served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the HCWBA 500 Club (4 yrs), 600 Club (5 yrs) and the Maryland State 700 Club (5 yrs).

Valerie comes from an athletic family – all bowlers! Her father, R. Wayne Bowen, USN (Ret.) and her mother, Betty Bowen Malkov were avid bowlers and quite accomplished in the game. Her mother was a junior bowler coach and taught her to bowl when she was seven. Her sister Pam is a HCUSBCWBA and Maryland State HOF member. Her other siblings Karen and Eric spent many years in league and tournament competition and have many accomplishments in the game. Her daughter Ocie bowled in junior leagues and continues to bowl in adult leagues. The love of the sport continues in the family!

The league play and tournament competition has brought about many lasting memories and wonderful experiences but it is the enduring friendships for the past 35 years that she sees as her ultimate bowling accomplishment!
